Weekly Weigh In

It has been a bitterly cold and snowy week here in Atlanta, and I woke up this morning praying and wishing with every fiber of my being that the scale would reflect the hard work I have been putting in. I didn't post weigh in last week, because I was SO defeated. After a week of eating and exercising perfectly, I had gained 1.6 pounds. I COULD NOT believe it....until I had a conversation with Lesli about how much we ate and drank on New Year's Eve....then I remembered how that happened. After a pep talk, I knew I had to stay the course and I am happy to say it payed off. I want this to be encouragement for anyone who has started and hasn't seen results.... HANG IN THERE ONE MORE WEEK! It could make all the difference.

Christina: -4.6 pounds
Goal: 20.4 pounds left to go!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey Y'all! I'm a little annoyed today. I've eaten perfect and exercised perfect for 2 weeks straight and I was completely flat. I started this week, so I'm hoping that's what's holding me back, but I'm getting really frustrated. I track my calories online, so I can be as precise as possible and I work hard at my exercises. I'm thinking I might be getting to a cardio every day point and now I do cardio 3-4xs a week. Oh well! I am so encouraged by Christina's weight loss! That is so awesome! Here I am... staying the course!
Lesli: 0
Goal: 10 left to go!
Hey! It's been a hard week for me, I had some type of bug and wasn't able to eat! I actually still don't have my appetite back...which is a good thing. I'm so happy for Christina! THATS GREAT! and LESLI, you do so well and eat so healthy and you look great and I think the last 10 will go soon. I know the holidays were so hard for everyone.
I didn't weigh in last week so I'm down 5 pounds for both the two weeks.
Ryan: -5 pounds for the past 2 weeks
New Year's Resolution....
My new year's resolution is to not have "loosing weight" as a resolution for next year.... and I have a plan!
I put some effort and time into deciding how I wanted to approach this year's weight loss goals....and I am taking it old school... yup... counting calories... My mother swears by this and I think it is no coincidence that I have met 2 people in the past 2 weeks that used this approach with great success. I feel like I seem to do better when I have parameters, and the more I pay attention to how many calories something is, the better I am at figuring out how much food I am consuming each day. Keeping a journal has helped a lot as well. (I splurged on a new planner to track everything!!!!)
The only bad part about getting back on track is I feel like all I think about is food right now. It always feels like this in the beginning...my life revolves around when, what, and how much I can eat.... But as each day goes by it gets a little bit easier.
I was at chruch on Sunday, and our pastor spoke about Gumption: The character to commit and complete. I think that I what I was lacking before. I am very good at committing to something, but not so great with the follow through. I think this is my year...... I am DETERMINED to make it all the way to my goal weight.
So here is my real New Year's resolution... GUMPTION.
I am looking forward to some good results this Friday for weigh in!!!!!
Atlanta Half Marathon
Last year, I posted a huge announcement on this blog about my decision to run a half marathon. I set the date of December 12th to participate in the Kiawah Island Half Marathon. What I didn't know at the time was, that was my older brother's graduation date... I could not miss that for the world because... well... he started working towards his Bachelor's degree in 1997. This was a HUGE accomplishment to say the least....
I decided this year that I was going to do it, and since there is a great half marathon right here in Atlanta, I figured it was the perfect time. It was the morning of Thanksgiving, and I thought what better way to start off a day of glutinous eating.... I'll run 13.1 miles, and eat to my heart's content with not one ounce of guilt.
This experience was such a time of great self reflection for me. First of all, I am not a runner. In fact, I don't even like running. I can say this now because I spent the past 3 months telling myself that I did like to run because I needed to stay in a good head space until after the race.... now its over, now I can say it... I DO NOT LIKE RUNNING! Why then would I EVER decide to participate in a half marathon?
I guess I just decided that I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone, set a goal that would be very hard for me to get through and accomplish it. When I found out that my brother's graduation date fell on the race day of the first half marathon that I planned on doing, my first reaction was relief. I was SO relieved that I didn't have to put myself through that... It was nice to say, " Well I started training and I was going to do it, but something beyond my control came up and I couldn't." After I thought about that, I was kind of disgusted. When did I become this person that runs from a challenge? I knew then that I had to prove to myself that I could do it.
I would love to say that I woke up with a fresh sense of strength and purpose, and was very disciplined and dedicated to this new task....... but I can't. I had meltdowns, breakdowns, my limbs went numb, pains in my back, my shins, my hair was a mess.... I was a mess. I know one thing for sure. It took the support of my very loving and patient friends to get me through this. I could never have done this without their great advice and words of encouragement through this entire process.
I still can't believe I finished. But I did...
WEEKLY WEIGH IN
I lost 1 pound! :) YIPEE!!!
Ryan's Total: 1 pound
I think I will start posting a picture each week so I can look back and hopefully see results. I will try to wear the same outfit (if I can remember).
Christina:
Hey Ya'll! I'm back in too! Today is my first day to start counting points and feeling great! I read through some of my old posts and got a bit sad. I was so motivated and encouraged to get to my goal weight, and unfortuantely, I have let the pounds slip back on over the course of this year.....There is however, one thing I know for sure, I can definately get them off again!!!
I look forward to updating every week, and hearing from all of you!
Christina Goal: -25 pounds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lesli: 0 lbs

I held steady this week and was so happy! I started my period on weigh in day (as luck would have it) and was so thankful to not be 10lbs up. Of course, that's how I felt! I had a little cold sneak up on me also, so I was proud that I pushed through and kept my workout routing going.

Workout Schedule:

Monday: 1 hr spin

Tuesday: 1 hr strength training (Bob Harper inside out method)

Wednesday: 1 hr spin

Thursday: rest

Friday: 1 hr yoga

Saturday or Sunday: Run & Rest

This week I focused on scaling back my portion sizes and staying away from carbs at night. I eat pretty much the same thing for breakfast and lunch everyday. Kashi cereal for breakfast to get my carbs in early and grilled chicken and fruit salad. No carbs for lunch is really easy for me, but not as easy at night, because Justin is usually eating with me! We plan our meals for the week on Sunday, so I'm going to start being a lot more specific about cutting out our night carbs! Coudln't hurt either of us!=)

Weekly Weigh In

Hello Everyone!!

This past month has been a pretty steady one for me. I didn't lose any significant amounts of weight but have been able to lose a little bit. I was out of town quite a bit, and COMPLETELY overindulged for 4 days over my birthday weekend. I really gave myself a pass to eat whatever I wanted, and indulged in pizza, cocktails, birthday cake, fried foods and a huge chocolate malt from Dairy Queen. (gasp!) It is amazing how your body burns calories when you are on a regular workout regimen. Seven days later, and can you believe it...I actually STILL lost weight. Clearly I know that I cannot make that a regular occurrence, but those foods tasted even better knowing that I had a plan to not let it throw me off my workout schedule, and my weight loss goals!

I'm Hooked!!!

If you follow me on Twitter, you have seen the countless entries on my new obsession...Yogli Mogli. Apparently, this self serve frozen yogurt shop is the first of its kind on the east coast. Their first location is literally a half a mile from my house. What's funny is, I had never tried it until Lesli was here for a weekend and suggested we check it out. We didn't get a chance to that weekend, but I tried it the next week and have been HOOKED ever since. A good friend of mine lives in LA, and apparently everyone is on the "Fro-Yo" kick... I totally see why. The flavors are delicious, you can get as much or as little as you like, and there are 40 toppings to choose from. Best of all, the frozen yogurt is fat free, and (if you don't get carried away with the toppings) it is a very low calorie treat. I have had a little bit for a snack, and often, I have it for lunch or dinner....in fact...I had it for lunch AND dinner today...Seriously....it is SO good.

My favorite flavor combinations are New York Cheesecake swirled with Strawberry, topped with fresh strawberries....the other is York Peppermint Patty with Pistachio.

I was going to take a picture for the blog and post it, but half way through my cup of yogurt when i realized I had TOTALLY forgotten to take a picture before I started devouring it...

They are opening up 5 more locations in Atlanta....I think I should go ask them for a job...

Their website has some information on the benefits of yogurt that were very interesting...I am glad its so good for me, because I'm addicted and I see lots more of this in my future...

How Yogurt Benefits The Body:

Many people eat yogurt for its health benefits, because yogurt is more than a delicious, nutritious food. The cultures in yogurt are considered beneficial to be present in the intestinal tract of the human body to insure proper balance needed for digestion and good health. Yogurt with live, active cultures can:
• Help to overcome lactose intolerance

• Aid digestion of milk protein

• Help prevent and combat digestive tract infections

In recent research, other exciting effects have been observed and are currently being studied. They include:

• The potential that yogurt can help boost the immune system

• An indication that yogurt may be useful in lowering serum cholesterol

• Yogurt's potential in the prevention and management of certain cancers

In addition, yogurt is a source of…

• Protein

• Calcium

• Potassium

• The vitamins B12 and Riboflavin

Weekly Weigh In...

Happy Friday everyone! It has been an awesome 4 weeks since the last time I updated. I can say now that I have consistently worked out 4-6 times a week for the past month! I have also modified my weight watchers regimen. What I try to do now is only use my flex points on weekends. This has really helped me stay focused during the week so that i feel good and get more out of my workouts. Things are finally on track and I am very happy about that. I looked back at past blog posts at all my "goal dates." If you have been reading, I think you know that I haven't been able to reach ANY of them! I have decided that instead of putting a date on when I need to be down a certain amount of weight, I am just going to keep doing what I am doing, and not stress as much about how long it is taking to get these pounds off. Of course, the first week I start to do this, I FINALLY get over the hump! No more hovering around the same weight and complaining about it people....I'm officially over the 15 pound mark!

The Hills...

Amy invited me to run a 4 mile loop near her house on Saturday, and of course I was happy to join. Her and her jogging buddy were so sweet, and totally slowed down to keep up with my pace. What she didn't accurately describe are the MASSIVE hills that were involved in this run. I promise 2 miles of it was COMPLETELY up hill. I have only been running on flat trails, so this was a BIG change for me. After the run, I was exhausted and my butt and thighs are STILL sore! Apparently running up hills is great for training and conditioning. Here is some information I found about the benefits.

In hill running, you are using their body weight as a resistance to push against, so the driving muscles from which their leg power is derived have to work harder. The technique to aim for is a "bouncy" style where you have good knee lift and maximum range of movement in the ankle. You should aim to drive hard, pushing upwards with your toes, flexing your ankle as much as possible, landing on the front part of the foot and then letting the heel come down below the level of the toes as the weight is taken. This stretches the calf muscles upwards and downwards as much as possible and applies resistance which overtime will improve their power and elasticity.

You should look straight ahead, as you run (not at your feet) and ensure your neck, shoulders and arms are free of tension. Many experts believe that the "bouncy" action is more important than the speed at which you run up the hills.

Hill work results in the calf muscles learning to contract more quickly and thereby generating work at a higher rate, they become more powerful. The calf muscle achieves this by recruiting more muscle fibres, around two or three times as many when compared to running on the flat. The "bouncy" action also improves the power of the quads in the front of the thigh as they provide the high knee lift that is required.

Hill training offers the following benefits:

  • Helps develop power and muscle elasticity
  • Improves stride frequency and length
  • Develops co-ordination, encouraging the proper use of arm action during the driving phase and feet in the support phase
  • Develops control and stabilization as well as improved speed (downhill running)
    promotes strength endurance
  • Develops maximum speed and strength (short hills)
  • Improves lactate tolerance (mixed hills)

My goal is to incorporate this run into my workout, so that I can get even stronger for the marathon. I did check right after this run and the course at Kiawah Island is supposed to be really flat... thank goodness!!

Weekly Weigh In

Hey guys, it's Friday....WAHOO! So it's my week to post on the weekly weigh-in and prob the worst week for me since we started. My weight is up (way up) and I'm totally to blame. Regardless of the exercise I've done the last week or so, it's my eating. I'll admit I got a bit out of control. I really haven't counted points in weeks, and the last few weeks I have eaten naughty foods like I did in the good ole days. You know the days when I wore elastic-waist gauchos? I've just been OVER IT lately. Sick of thinking about it, sick of counting points, sick of eating salad when other ate chimichanga with queso on top. And since weight loss is A LOT mental, my mind took over my food. Aaarrrgggg! I weighed myself on Tuesday and was SHOCKED and then DISGUSTED. So I'm back on track and eating lean protein and veggies! Speaking of I need to go get my chicken and asparagus off the grill. Hoping to have much better results next week. Love,

Run Forrest Run.....

Well it's time to fully commit. I said that once I worked up to running 3 miles, that I would get real running shoes. I have been rockin' the $35 New Balance sneakers that I bought 2 years ago from TJ Maxx. They have done me well. When I decided to run the marathon, I went to the Big Peach Running Co. in Atlanta, got the stride of my run analyzed and my feet scanned to find the perfect running shoe. I like running shoes with lots of gel, because if my feet hurt, it just isn't going to work. I ordered my running shoes weeks ago, but of course I had to get the pink ones, so it took a few weeks to come in. Running shoes are no cheap purchase, but I am sure I will get good use out of them, and they will help with my running tremendously. These are not the exact shoes that I ordered, but they are very similar. They are made by Asics.

We went down to LA....lower Alabama for the weekend to visit my family. I got up at 6am on the 4th of July with my Grandfather,"Papa". He took me to the local track so I could get my run in. All weekend long he bragged to anyone who would listen about how I ran THREE MILES. He was very proud, and that made me feel good. I know it may not sound like a really long distance, but its the longest distance I have EVER run in my life. I have to add 10 miles to that which is a bit intimidating, but at least I'm off to a good start.

I also want to send some love to Lesli, who has been kickin' butt and taking names with her marathon training. She is up to 12 miles, bless her heart... You can do it Girl! I'll be there at the finish line cheering you on! Sixty days and counting!!

Is everyone off of work today! I am! YIPEE! I plan on going to the beach or hanging out at a pool. I love summer and it's going by so fast, which is depressing because I'm still not sporting a bikini around! I feel like Ive been stuck in a rut, I need some help getting out of it. I have lost 0 pounds this week. Hopefully I can pass over this -10 pounds soon and leave it for good! 15 would be nice to see :) Hope everyone has a fun and safe July 4!

Patience....

It is so funny to me how everyone's weight loss jouney is different, yet the same feelings and frustrations are true with all of us. I, like Allie have been feeling a bit frustrated lately, but for a different reason. I knew last week after my weigh in post exactly what I wanted to write about today. While I feel I have been doing a good job with the food aspect, for the past month I have been back on my workout plan, and really focusing to get the last 18 pounds that I need to loose off. Despite my hard work, all I have seen is my weight fluctuate around the same place as usual.

I am a bit of a hypochondriac sometimes, and of course I think there is something wrong with me. Do I have thyroid issues? Oh my gosh.... am i PREGNANT??!!

The answer is NO. The answer is, I have to be patient with myself. I know that the first 12 pounds that I have lost have been a result of me eating better. I feel like my body has adjusted to this now, and I have to burn more calories so that I can loose more weight. I have really started to focus on workouts, and of course I think that it means that I am going to drop pounds instantly...but the truth is, the body doesn't always work like that. Here is a little bit of an article I read about this subject.

Just because you start exercising doesn't always mean your body will respond to that immediately. As Cathy Leman puts it, "...in some instances the body needs to sort of "recalibrate"' itself. Increased activity and new eating habits (taking in more or less calories) require the body to make adjustments." Cathy recommends that you give yourself several weeks or months for your body to respond to what you're doing.

So I have decided to re-focus, and be grateful for the things that my increased exercising HAS made a difference with:

More energy - I am WIRED all the time. I pop right out of bed, and have not slept in, or felt like I needed to sleep in for weeks. I have been MUCH more productive, am really happy with all the additional things I accomplish every day.

Better sleep - I am out like a light. I have had trouble falling asleep for the past year...I blamed it on stress. As soon as I started working out harder, my head can't hit the pillow fast enough.

More confidence - I feel stronger, leaner, and more flexible everyday. I like that I can make it through a run or an hour long cardio class, and feel good after...not nauseous and dehydrated.

Sometimes the scale is not the only measure of success on a weight loss journey. I am choosing to not get frustrated, but to stay consistent. I am positive that the minute that I stop STRESSING about the scale, and start enjoying the gift that I give my body by taking care of it, I will see these pounds drop and drop...

Weekly Weigh In

Happy Friday Fat Chicks! It's been a month since we last met here & it's been a rocky month! I feel like my weight has been up & down and back & forth, and the scale told me that it was too! I varied between a few pounds each week and I did this week too. Bleh!

On to the good news... marathon training is going great! I did several things last week that I've never done. 1. I ran 10 miles (at once). 2. I ran those 10 miles while on vacation! Justin and I made a weekend trip to see Christina & Kenneth and me and Christina were up at 6 am on Saturday morning to hit the trail and then spent the rest of the day shopping! Hey, it's our cardio!

I can say this, my long runs were my permission to splurge in areas that I hadn't been splurging in, so that explains the extra pounds. This week I've really focused on being more disciplined in my diet and not just giving in to every whim and every dessert in front of me!

Weekly Weigh In

Hello Everyone!!

I feel like a zombie right now...I just got back from an entire week on the road for work, and arrived in Atlanta at about 10:30pm last night. Typically when I go on these trips I treat them as mini vacations. I splurge, eat and drink delicious things and say that I will work out when I get back. I made a conscious decision this time to NOT do that. I had grilled fish and veggies at dinner instead of steak and lobster. I passed the breakfast buffet filled with Belgian waffles, , muffins, pastries, bacon and hash browns, and opted for an egg white omelet with fruit. I ran while I was there, and worked out 3 times before I left. I wasn't perfect, I did indulge in a bit of wine, but by far this is the best I have EVER done while traveling for work. I have a trip like this every month for the next 6 months, so I figured if I didn't get a handle on it right from the start, it would only take me that much longer to reach my weight loss goals. Since my last weigh in post I have really kicked up my workouts, and though I haven't seen a ton on change on the scale, I notice a big difference in my clothes and how things fit. I am letting that encourage me as much as smaller numbers on the scale does. I hope all of you are staying focused and encouraged as well!

Weekly Weigh In

Allie: Hey guys, how was the week? Mine was a bummer. I was SICK. No voice at all. Dr. said a virus attacked my vocal chords, weird huh? I'm hyped up on steroids and getting better by the day. I'm up a pound and totally know why....my FOOD. I ate whatever I wanted on vacation and since I've been home have felt too bad to cook & grill veggies and pack healthy lunches. As yall know I'm the NON working out fat chick; Les & Christina are kicking butt and taking names training for their marathons and Ryan is naturally very active. Well I'm NOT, so I have to really watch what I eat and can totally tell when I'm going to have a good week, because of it. For example I was very conscious the week before I left for my trip, I was down 3 lbs. Because I ate lean grilled chicken and veggies for dinner and leftovers for lunch and kept my carbs to a minimum. I know there are 2 schools when it comes to the low carb discussion. People that are working out hard, NEED carbs...but lazy ole me doesn't need nearly as many since I don't burn lots of extra calories. I DO eat plenty of complex carbs in veggies & beans but the weeks that I really am conscious about lowering the breads, pasta & potatoes I always see a difference in the scale. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Goal Dress.....

Lesli came to visit me for a few days last month, and we decided to do some bargain shopping. I say bargain shopping as if we ever shop any other way....but you get my point. Shopping is our cardio as you all know....

We ran across this super cute dress....at a FABULOUS price. At first glance it looks a lot bigger than it is. It was only when i was trying to shove my big hips into this dress that i realized....either i think i look a lot smaller than i do, or i still size up outfits based on how my body used to look. Either way, in about 30 seconds, I realized that the cute little dress was NOT going to get past my neck....

I walked out of the dressing room and told Lesli about what had just happened and she came up with an awesome idea of making it my "Goal Dress." Oprah does this too...she puts a dress on her vision board that she wants to be able to fit into, and it motivates her to loose or keep off weight.
I am estimating I need to shed about 18 more pounds before I can fit into this dress. I have set my birthday, August 1st as the day to do it. When that is done, I will be at my goal weight, 30 pounds lighter than I was when I started this journey. I think that is PLENTY of time, and hopefully I can get that amount of weight off before then, but I feel like it is a pretty healthy goal.

So now it's hanging in the front of my closet and everyday I go to get dressed I sneak a glance at it. It's such a "Christina" dress. I can't wait till I can fit it... At least for now, I can be happy that I have a cute pair of shoes for it, and they already fit.....

Weekly Weigh In

It's Friday! How did y'alls week go? Did y'all do good staying within your points & getting some activity points in? Anyone else besides Steph feeling like they are in a lull & hitting dreaded plateau? Allie told us once that there is no such thing as a plateau, according to our good friend Jillian, if you are burning off more than you take in, you will lose weight!

The one thing I can say is change things up! Someone once said that, "Learning is not learning unless behavior changes." If what you're doing right now has forced you into a plateau lull, it's not working! Change up your exercise, change up your eating habits, don't ever ever ever skip breakfast & plan for the weekends! Steph, I spend most nights of my weekend eating out, because it's what me and my husband do. In order to survive all the restaurant eating, I do NOT skip weekend workouts (new habit I had to get into), I keep my breakfast & lunch points low & keep my portion size to a minimal when dining out.

Losing weight is NOT easy, my friends, BUT I know we can ALL do it & we all WILL do it! Stay strong and keep up the hard work!

Weekly Weigh-In REVAMPED!!

Hola FFC Followers! It's Christina G. After some discussion, we decided to change up the whole weekly weigh in posts. Since our losses are smaller amounts of weight at a time now that we have gotten the initial big chunks out of the way, we are each going to take turns posting about how we are doing. Since there are four of us, this will give us 4 weeks to make huge changes, and tell all of you about what our progress has been during the month. We will still post our weigh in amounts each week to keep each other in check and of course our weekly blogs to keep giving you guys tips, and motivation for living a healthy lifestyle. :-)

So I am up first! Well I am very proud to say, I AM BACK IN ACTION!!! No more weepy eyes looking at the scale this week my friends... I am down 3 POUNDS THIS WEEK! I was not lying when I said I wrote down every morsel of food I put in my mouth, (technically i tracked it on my phone with iwatcher) and I exercised 4 times this week by taking dance class, running and some weight training.

Looking at that scale was just the boost of confidence that I needed to kick my self back into gear. I am so glad to be back on track! Even though I still have some work to do to get back to the 15 pounds that I lost, I feel confident that that mark is just a few weeks away! The next time you hear from me on weigh in day, I hope to FAR surpass that!!

I love iphone....

A few months ago, Lesli bought me the cutest spiral notebooks to track my points with. Unfortunately, they are so cute, I started using them for work instead of points tracking! I have really tried to make a better effort at writing everything down. My recent gains have me really focused on making sure that I am doing all the right things to keep my weight going down instead of up. I have an iphone.....and naturally I LOVE it. I found the perfect application to track my points and activity for the day. I ALWAYS have my phone on me, and it takes just a second for me to plug in a point or exercise value. I also have an application where I can plug in the WW formula, and figure out how many points something has. I have only been using it for a few days, but it is SO helpful. Weekly Weigh In

Lesli~ Not to be an annoying turd-bird, but I've been away from my shiny glass scale since early Monday morning which means I totally missed weigh in. I have no idea where I stand, but I can tell you that I ran up and down a mountain and it made me feel like it was the first time to lace up tennis shoes! Holy Moly, friends! Running mountains ain't easy! Glad to be home tomorrow & back in my routine! Have a nice weekend!

Allie~ Hey guys. I grilled the heck out of some turkey burgers & veggies and ate on them most of the week. Thankfully I lost the 2lbs that I had gained last week and an extra 1/2 a lb too. I was relieved to see that number. I'm not excited cause (bring on the broken record once again....) that just brings me back to the same place i've been for months. Insert exhausted faces here, "sick & tired of being sick & tired" right? Haha. But that's where I am right now. And honestly I just watched the 2 hr Grey's Anatomy and I'm emotionally spent! Did yall watch? OMG. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Love, love.
Week: -2.5 lbs
Total: -22.5 lbs

Christina - I bought some "goal" pants yesterday. After stepping on the scale today, I am further away from that than i thought...I don't quite know what is going on, but I am up one pound. Two pounds in two weeks. I got a little teary eyed on the scale. I just felt that all my hard work is slipping away from me. All I can do is keep at it and stay focused. I hope to have better news next week friends.

Week: +1
Total: -10 pounds
